Biography:
The Rival, also known as Dr. Edward Clariss, is a villain from the Golden Age of DC Comics, primarily associated with the original Flash, Jay Garrick.

Clariss was a professor at the university Jay Garrick attended. He believed he had recreated the formula that gave Garrick his speed. However, his claims were dismissed by the scientific community.

Bitter and resentful, Clariss created a darker version of the Flash's costume and used his temporary speed-enhancing drug to become The Rival. He committed crimes to prove his superiority and discredit Garrick.

The Rival first appeared in Flash Comics #104 (February 1949).

Ultimately, the effects of Clariss's speed formula were unstable, leading to his defeat and apparent vanishing into the Speed Force. He has reappeared in various forms throughout DC Comics history.
